Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s and 1980s. It has since become a multi-billion dollar franchise with countless films, books, video games, and television shows. However, the franchise is now in danger of losing its appeal due to its lack of diversity and inability to reflect modern society.
Star Wars: Visions is a graphic novel that gives the franchise a long-overdue, fresh take. It’s not just for fans of the movies or books, but anyone who loves science fiction and fantasy.
There aren’t many computer games on the horizon that fight Jedi against Sith, so it’s worth paying attention to Star Wars: Visions, an anthology series that, when it premieres on Disney+ today, will offer the world-renowned franchise its first significant and long-overdue injection of anime.
Star Wars: Visions is a collection of nine animated short films in which one of seven Japanese anime studios is in charge of each. Names like Kamikaze Douga, Geno Studio, and Science Saru are among those who will bring their own distinct visual style and narrative to the table.
The series’ official Disney+ description says, “As a first formal foray into anime, each ‘Star Wars: Visions’ short carries a distinct Japanese sensibility, which in many ways fits with the tone and spirit of Star Wars narrative.”
Although they’re all anime, the trailer alone shows a lot of diversity, including one episode that looks a lot like Akira Kurosawa’s films, which were a big influence on George Lucas when he was creating the original Star Wars trilogy.
Star Wars: Visions is a fresh and more concentrated perspective on the world that favors condensed narrative above lengthy runtimes. At the same time, it won’t be short on the usual suspects, so expect plenty of lightsaber battles and force abilities, although through a new lens.
Star Wars: Visions is now accessible on Disney+ as of September 22.
