The Ingredients You Need

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • Oil for frying (I used canola)

How to Make the Doughnut Dough

The first thing you need to do is combine the sugar and shortening in a bowl and cream them together until they’re light and fluffy. Then, add the egg and mix it in well. In another bowl, whisk together the baking soda, baking powder, salt, and milk. Add this to the creamed mixture and mix until everything is well combined. Now, add the flour to the mixture and mix until everything is incorporated and you have a smooth dough.

The Different Ways to Fry a Doughnut

The next step is to heat up the oil for frying. You’ll want to use a deep pot or Dutch oven and fill it with about 2-3 inches of oil. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 365 degrees F. Once the oil is hot enough, it’s time to start frying! Take small balls of dough (I used a cookie scoop) and carefully drop them into the hot oil. Fry for about 2 minutes per side, or until they’re golden brown and cooked through. Remove the doughnuts from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to cool.

Frosting and Toppings for Your Doughnuts

Once they’re cool enough to handle, you can add your favorite toppings! I used a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and milk, but you could also use a chocolate Ganache, cinnamon sugar, or anything else you can think of. Dip the top of each doughnut into the topping of your choice and enjoy!
