With all of that aside, there’s no denying that Belichick is an all-time great. With the Patriots, he’s won six Super Bowls and presided over probably the greatest sports dynasty in history, together with Tom Brady.
The Patriots are now 5-4 and in a tight race for first place in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills. He’s doing it with a rookie quarterback, mind you, which just adds to his brilliance.
So, what has been Belichick’s secret to success?
If someone knows the answer to that question, they might theoretically use it to take over the world, or at the very least win a few football games.

Belichick is regarded as one of the greatest NFL tacticians of all time. His teams are known for playing rugged, basic football. It’s not always attractive or dynamic, but the outcomes are hard to disagree with.
The Patriots aren’t afraid to slow down a game and make their opponents work for every yard and point. In a modern-day NFL when high-flying offenses are favored, it’s a retro approach, but maybe that’s why it works. When New England’s defense gets on the field, opposing offenses know they’re in for a battle. On offense, Belichick will control the time and suffocate the other team’s will while dinking and dunking his way down the field.
The Patriots have a history of identifying what the other team excels at and then denying them access to that accomplishment.
According to Belichick, it’s an age-old strategy.
Sun Tzu and other old-school military generals are sources of inspiration for Belichick.
When asked where his matchup approach to game preparation came from, Bill Belichick responds “Look at Sun Tzu if you want to go back far enough. Take a look at some of the great generals. Play to your strengths and take advantage of your opponent’s flaws.”

During a recent press conference, the famous coach was asked how he came up with his matchup-based coaching method.
Belichick, like many great individuals before him, seems to recognize that you don’t always have to be the smartest guy in the room; you just have to be the best thief. We’re not talking about Nicolas Cage attempting to steal The Constitution or anything like that; rather, we’re talking about taking knowledge from those who came before you.
“Look at Sun Tzu if you want to go back far enough.” “Take a look at the great generals,” he said. “Attack your opponent’s vulnerabilities while playing to your strengths.”
Sun Tzu was a military officer and strategist in ancient China. He is credited with writing “The Art of War,” a well-known military manual that has influenced innumerable generals on the battlefield and strategists and philosophers.
Despite the fact that Sun Tzu’s book is about war tactics, passages from it often appear in locker rooms owing to their relevance to sports. How about this as an example? In Aaron Rodgers’ book club, “The Art of War” is a suggested read.
To win the remainder of the season, the Patriots will need a sound approach.

On second thinking, that’s not a good idea. It’s not a trap game because Belichick doesn’t play trap games. According to Sun Tzu’s wisdom, he is the one who lays the traps.
