The LAUSD Board of Education overwhelmingly picked Carvalho, 57, for the position at a special meeting Thursday morning.

“I am fortunate and delighted to announce that the Los Angeles Unified School District has given me the post of superintendent,” Carvalho stated. “In fact, they recently finished a meeting where they reached this choice unanimously.” And now we’ll begin a period of contract discussions.”

On Dec. 14, the board is anticipated to finalize and vote on a new contract.

Since 2008, Carvalho has served as the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. It is the country’s fourth-largest school district, with LAUSD being the second-largest.

“I think that public education is the vitality, the gasoline, of our democracy,” Carvalho stated. “We safeguard democracy by doing the right thing for our schools and our students.” That is what I will bring to Los Angeles, a community that has faced and continues to confront the same issues we have.”

Carvalho characterized himself as a “poor boy from Portugal” who worked as a dishwasher and a day laborer in his first employment in the United States and was homeless at times. Carvalho moved to the United States after graduating from high school. He went to college and then began teaching in Miami-Dade County as a science instructor.

“I chose to travel past the area today, a few streets away from here, where I was homeless maybe 29 or 30 years ago,” Carvalho said. “This has been an honor, a pleasure, and a narrative that can only be told in America.”

The New York City Public Schools system attempted to persuade Carvalho to go in 2018, but he refused due to impassioned pleadings from the Miami community.

“Although I’ll be based in Los Angeles, Miami will always have a particular place in my heart,” Carvalho said.

Since Austin Beutner formally stepped down in June, LAUSD has been without a permanent superintendent. Beutner took over as Superintendent of LAUSD in May of 2018 and led the district through the first 16 months of the COVID-19 epidemic. Since then, interim superintendent Megan K. Reilly has been in charge.

“As an educator and leader of a big urban district, Alberto Carvalho has the profound knowledge we need to handle L.A. Unified’s continuing response to and recovery from the COVID-19 epidemic,” stated LAUSD Board President Kelly Gonez in a statement. “As the long-serving Superintendent of Miami-Dade Public Schools, he created a strong track record of outstanding student results and has fought tirelessly to achieve more fairness for historically underprivileged neighborhoods.” I’m certain he’ll maintain that concentration in Los Angeles, and he’ll be up to the difficulties and possibilities that lie ahead.”
